History and Philosophy of Science

This series invites book proposals that include innovative strategies for pursuing history and philosophy of science. Especially welcome are scholarly works using non-analytic philosophical perspectives to successfully bring to bear on our understanding of how scientific practices are related to the humanities and the social sciences. The series also welcomes exploration of the sciences in relation to gender, culture, society, and the intellectual and social contexts that illuminate the places, the structures of origination, and the patterns of development over generations. Approaches may include focused analyses of thinkers from unorthodox perspectives that can shed new light on the history and philosophy of science, such as Montaigne, Bruno, Galileo, Newton, Pascal, Emerson, Thoreau, Nietzsche, Jung, Freud. Proposals aimed at probing the philosophical intersections between the sciences and other societal practices that can be configured as heretic are also encouraged. These might include the emergence of the psychoanalytic movements in the twentieth century, how the fine arts have impinged on the historical processes that gave rise to the sciences over the last few centuries, how in turn the intellectual frameworks inaugurated by the sciences have been imported into the avant-garde movements that paralleled the advent of industrialized societies, and finally how contemporary scientific domains of knowledge reverberate in ’deviant’ social and artistic practices.

Studies in Philosophy of Language and Linguistics

The series brings together contemporary research within the fields of philosophy of language and linguistics. The range of topics includes philosophical and formal investigations into the nature of language, the influence of philosophy (especially, but not exclusively, analytic) upon linguistics and the philosophical background of semantic and pragmatic theories. Other topics of interest include the influence of modern linguistic research upon philosophy, issues in linguistic methodology, linguistic and philosophical aspects of argumentation, and the interrelations between philosophy of language, philosophy of literature, and philosophy of mind. Volumes in the series should be of interest to philosophers, linguists, and researchers within the fields of logic, argumentation theory, cognitive science and communication studies. This series is designed to encourage philosophers to explore new directions of research in philosophy. The underlying premise of the series is that contemporary philosophical research is impeded by an understanding of the intellectual division of labor according to which philosophy is conceived of as separate from the natural and social sciences, the arts and humanistic disciplines. Science is impoverished by the neglect of immediate attention to the metaphysical and moral questions posed by scientific developments. The arts and humanistic disciplines are also impoverished by a lack of sufficient attention to the philosophical implication of innovation in each of these areas. Studies in Philosophy, History of Ideas and Modern Societies

Until the publication of volume 21 the title of the series was "Polish Contemporary Philosophy and Philosophical Humanities". The series aspires to present a wide and relevant overview of best Polish works in philosophy and philosophical parts of the major fields of the humanities: political and social sciences, history, religious studies or what is named in Poland "the history of ideas". The subsequent editions of books within this series are either re-editions of the works previously published in non-Polish versions, or new translations from Polish. Some books contain extended works, other ones provide collections of smaller papers. Some of the authors presented in the series are widely acknowledged and regarded to be the "classics" of Polish intellectual life in the second half of the 20th Century, others are recognized as outstanding professors today. The quality and fame of the works and authors presented in the series are the only criteria for inclusion. The series is open to all streams of Polish philosophy: from analytical philosophy, through phenomenology and hermeneutics, to existential or religious philosophies. Also the word "philosophy" should be understood very widely in this case.

New Approaches in Educational and Social Sciences / Neue Denkansätze in den Bildungs- und Sozialwissenschaften

The series presents a broad spectrum of research results from the field of education, encompassing contributions from Eastern European countries. In addition to educational science, the monographs and anthologies, written in German or English, explore topics from various disciplines such as sociology, philosophy, and political science. Up to volume 38, the series was published under the title "Baltische Studien zur Erziehungs- und Sozialwissenschaft / Baltic Studies in Educational and Social Sciences". Die Schriftenreihe bietet ein breites Themenspektrum von Forschungsergebnissen aus der Pädagogik - unter anderem auch aus osteuropäischen Ländern. Neben erziehungswissenschaftlichen Aspekten fließen auch Themen aus anderen Fachbereichen, unter anderem der Soziologie, Philosophie und Politikwissenschaft, in die auf Deutsch oder Englisch verfassten Monographien und Sammelbände ein. Bis Band 38 erschien die Reihe unter dem Titel "Baltische Studien zur Erziehungs- und Sozialwissenschaft / Baltic Studies in Educational and Social Sciences".

Studies in Philosophy, Culture and Contemporary Society

The aim of the series is to present classical philosophical thought and knowledge about problems and processes which take place in contemporary society. Such a perspective stems from the very relationship between philosophy and social sciences, which is both dynamic and reflexive. On the one hand, in its pure form as a ‘theoria,’ philosophical thought – even if sometimes abstracts from the social context – always remains an active observation that, in the long run, has an impact on social processes, and especially on social sciences. On the other hand, there is a reverse process in which social phenomena directly stimulate philosophical thought. As part of the series, we plan to publish monographs and volumes dealing with specific problems or social phenomena. Furthermore, the works of Polish societies, like The Polish Leibnizian Society and The Bachelard Society ‘Mythopaeia’, and others will be published.

Warsaw Studies in Philosophy and Social Sciences

The "Warsaw Studies in Philosophy and Social Sciences" aims to showcase new work from Poland, and possibly from other Central and East European countries dealing with wide range of current and traditional issues of philosophy and social sciences. The volumes will range from classical monographs of single case studies via comparative accomplishments to collective edited volumes. Authors are welcome to contribute manuscripts of monographs and collective works. The series was coedited by Prof. Jakub Kloc-Konkołowicz (1975-2021).

Lawrence Krader’s Legacy in Science, History and Philosophy

Lawrence Krader (1920-1998) was an American philosopher and anthropologist best known for his empirical work among the various indigenous peoples of Central Asia; his transcription, editing and publication of Karl Marx’s ethnological notebooks; his work on the formation of the state; and his theory of labor and value, in which he critically traced the history of objective value theory from Aristotle to Marx and the Marxists, and attempted to bring it into line with the subjective value theory from Böhm-Bawerk, to von Mises and von Hayek. Just prior to his death Krader expressed his desire to establish a research project in conjunction with Cyril Levitt at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The Lawrence Krader Research Project was officially established in April 2008 to edit, introduce and publish Krader's many unpublished works. The first years of the series will focus on these unpublished manuscripts. Subsequnetly the series will include works by others who have taken up Krader’s ideas critically in their own work. The editors particularly welcome manuscripts that develop a serious critical appraisal of Krader’s works. At the same time, they also welcome the work of those newly minted or seasoned scholars who take up some of the questions raised by Krader in his various works.

The aim of the series Worlds of South and Inner Asia of the Swiss Asia Society is to publish highquality, representative work issuing from academic research on all aspects of South and Inner Asia. In our series Culture and Knowledge we publish selected philosophical studies with a focus on Philosophy of Science and Intercultural Philosophy. Culture and Knowledge is edited by Professor Friedrich Wallner whose areas of specialisation encompass Philosophy of Science and Intercultural Philosophy. His extensive research covers a wide range of topics, from Theory of Psychotherapy to Traditional Chinese Medicine. In unserer Reihe Culture and Knowledge veröffentlichen wir Studien aus dem Fachbereich der Philosophie mit einem starken Fokus auf Wissenschaftstheorie und Interkulturelle Philosophie. This is a series of red-hot women's writing after the "isms." lt focuses on new cultural assemblages that are emerging from the deformation, breakout, ebullience, and discomfort of postmodern feminism. The series brings together a post-foundational generation of women's writing that, while still respectful of the idea of situated knowledge, does not rely on neat disciplinary distinctions and stable political coalitions. This writing transcends some of the more awkward textual performances of a first generation of "ferninism-meets-postmodernism" scholarship. lt has come to terms with its own body of knowledge as shifty, inflammatory, and ungovernable, The aim of the series is to make this cutting edge thinking more readily available to undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers and new academics, and professional bodies and practitioners. Thus, we seek contributions from writers whose unruly scholastic projects are expressed in texts that are accessible and seductive to a wider academic readership. Thus, we seek contributions from writers whose unruly scholastic projects are expressed in texts that are accessible and seductive to a wider academic readership. Proposals and/or manuscripts are invited from the domains of: "post" humanities, human movement studies, sexualities, media studies, literary criticism, information technologies, history of ideas, performing arts, gay and lesbian studies, cultural studies, post-colonial studies, pedagogics, social psychology, and the philosophy of science. We are particularly interested in publishing research and scholarship with international appeal from Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

Interfaces

The series explores issues in theoretical and applied linguistics, psycholinguistics, psychology of language and translation studies. While the volumes published in the series may present research in language, mind and translation seen as separate provenances, the overall aim of the series is to pinpoint possible interfaces occurring between them (for example between psycholinguistics and translation studies, psycholinguistics and cognitive linguistics, cognitive linguistics and translation, etc.) as well as to uncover mutual interaction between these branches of science and other research areas, such as philosophy, media studies, education, multimodality and culture. The books within the series focus primarily on linguistics, which remains the main theme of the series, but they also include a wide range of topics traditionally investigated by a number of neighbouring disciplines, which are interwoven with language studies and inscribe within a wider framework of contemporary linguistics. The series presents studies conducted by Polish scholars, in particular by those affiliated with Bydgoszcz, and by our colleagues and research partners representing other universities. We also welcome submissions (monographs, collections of articles and post-conference volumes) from all those interested in issues remaining within the broad scope of the series themes. European Semiotics / Sémiotiques Européennes

European Semiotics originated from an initiative launched by a group of researchers in Semiotics from Denmark, Germany, Spain, France and Italy and was inspired by innovative impulses given by René Thom and his «semiophysics». The goal of the series is to provide a broad European forum for those interested in semiotic research focusing on semiotic dynamics and combining cultural, linguistic and cognitive perspectives. This approach, which has its origins in Phenomenology, Gestalt Theory, Philosophy of Culture and Structuralism, views semiosis primarily as a cognitive process, which underlies and structures human culture. Semiotics is therefore considered to be the discipline suited par excellence to bridge the gap between the realms of the Cognitive Sciences and the Sciences of Culture. The series publishes monographs, collected papers and conference proceedings of a high scholarly standard. Languages of publication are mainly English and French. Sémiotiques européennes est le résultat d'une initiative prise par un groupe de chercheurs en sémiotique, originaires du Danemark, d'Allemagne, d'Espagne, de France et d'Italie, inspirée par l'impulsion innovatrice apportée par René Thom et sa «sémiophysique». Le but de cette collection est de fournir une large tribune européenne à tous ceux qui s'intéressent à la recherche sémiotique portant sur les dynamiques sémiotiques, et réunissant des perspectives culturelles, linguistiques et cognitives. Cette approche, qui se nourrit de différentes sources, telle que la phénoménologie, le gestaltisme, la philosophie de la culture et le structuralisme, part du principe que la sémiosis est essentiellement un procès cognitif, qui sous-tend et structure toute culture humaine. La sémiotique est donc considérée comme la discipline par excellence capable de créer un pont entre les domaines des Sciences cognitives et ceux des Sciences de la culture. Writing and Culture in the Long Nineteenth Century

The long nineteenth century, extending from the Napoleonic Wars to the First World War, was a time of enormous change and experimentation. This series aims to publish the work of scholars and critics alert to these changes in a variety of spheres, including literature, art, the sciences, philosophy, and economics. The editors have a special interest in work that addresses questions of aesthetics, poetics, and form at the intersection between the written word, the visual and decorative arts, architecture, and music. Many scholars are now working on the cultural matrix out of which these forms emerge and recent critical thinking has shown how important was the prevailing economic, political, scientific, and philosophical climate in creating the appropriate conditions for artistic production. Some volumes in the series focus on specific writers and texts, while others consider the connection between writing, art, philosophy, and science and the broader cultural horizon. All contribute significantly to the widening sphere of nineteenth-century literary studies.

Reflections on Signs and Language

This book series proposes themes that are generally associated with the so-called language and sign sciences, in the first place semiotics, linguistics and philosophy of language, inclusive of literary language. It also focuses on problems that interest the communication sciences, including mass-medial communication and the question of translation. However, the perspective is not limited to any one of these disciplinary spheres. Moreover, the series intends to propose a vision that is critical, open and dialogic, which means to say developed in terms of interdisciplinary dialogue. Such an approach is proficuous if it is not limited to encounter among specific disciplines, competencies and interests at a scientific level alone. In fact, a priority characterising this series is to create the conditions for encounter between the sciences of signs, language and communication, on the one hand, and the problems of everyday life which are closely involved, indeed are engendered in them, on the other. We live in a world where life overall as much as the life of each one of us depends increasingly on signs, language and communication. But there’s more: not only human life, but life in general, as biosemiotics now evidences unequivocally, consists of communication and is made of signs. We are looking forward to receiving contributions from all over the world, mindful of the series’ interdisciplinary orientation, characteristics and interests. Submissions should be written in English and will be peer-reviewed by the relevant specialists.

The series "Thought, Society, Culture: Slovenian and South Eastern European Perspectives" explores languages, cultures, and societies of Central and South Eastern Europe, with a special focus on Slovenia. Its titles and topics present significant works of the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU) whose multidisciplinary structure brings together philosophy, social anthropology, archaeology, general and cultural history, art history, musicology, linguistics, literary studies, sociology, ethnology, folklore, and geography. The aim of the series is to publish in-depth studies in the humanities and social sciences produced not only by ZRC SAZU but also by other scholars from Slovenia and elsewhere.
