European integration is a profound phenomenon influencing our current understanding of political and social processes in Europe and beyond. The set of European institutions that have now functioned in the continent for over half a century have created new broadened frames of reference for a variety of social actors. The most comprehensive is the European Union, which can be characterised as a multilevel polity. The other organisations, such as the Council of Europe and OSCE, also contribute significantly to the new mode of relations in Europe. This has in turn influenced how social and political actors act and define their roles. European integration has changed the functioning of states, their sovereignty and the meaning and status of borders, as well as the nature of citizenship. It has also allowed social actors to be engaged in the increasingly transnationalised public sphere and therefore changed the analysis of the concept of civil society. In addition, it profoundly impacts the life of individuals, permitting spatial and social mobility along with reconstruction of collective identity and memory. This series welcomes book proposals that look at the political and social aspects of human activities in the broadest terms but analysed from the perspective of how these processes are transformed as a result of European integration. The series is open to work emerging from research cooperation between Polish and foreign scholars. Authors are welcome to submit manuscripts of monographs, collected volumes, and post-conference volumes. Outstanding dissertations will also be considered for publication.

Never has there been a time when confronting the complexity of these evolving relationships been so important to the maintenance of civil society. The aim of this book series is to study the various aspects of risk linked to human activities. Scientific and technological development is changing our society fundamentally and the concept of risk is crucial for the analysis of the ongoing social transformation process. Progress in genetic engineering and the use of military technology by civilians, for instance, raise questions concerning ethical, political, environmental and public-health issues. This series, therefore, opts for a multidisciplinary approach to the problem of risk, which involves the scientific community as much as the political world and civil society. It publishes monographs and collected papers, mainly in French or English. Cette collection a pour principal objectif de traiter les différents aspects de la problématique des risques associés aux activités humaines. Parmi celles-ci, le développement scientifique, technologique et économique s’impose de plus en plus comme un moteur fondamental du changement social. Dans cette perspective, le concept de risque se révèle un outil pertinent d’analyse des processus de transformation sociale. À titre d’exemple, les recherches en génie génétique, de même que l’utilisation civile de technologie militaire, soulèvent inévitablement des questions d’éthique, de santé publique, d’environnement et de gestion des politiques publiques. Régionalisme & Fédéralisme / Regionalism & Federalism

The contemporary nation-state is undergoing a series of transformations which question its traditional role as a container of social, political and economic systems. New spaces are emerging with the rise of regional production systems, movements for territorial autonomy and the rediscovery of old and the invention of new identities. States have responded by restructuring their systems of territorial government, often setting up an intermediate or regional level. There is no single model, but a range, from administrative deconcentration to federalization. Some states have regionalized in a uniform manner, while others have adopted asymmetrical solutions. In many cases, regions have gone beyond the nation-state, seeking to become actors in broader continental and transnational systems. The series covers the gamut of issues involved in this territorial restructuring, including the rise of regional production systems, political regionalism, questions of identity, and constitutional change. It will include the emergence of new systems of territorial regulation and collective action within civil society as well as the state. There is no a priori definition of what constitutes a region, since these span a range of spatial scales, from metropolitan regions to large federated states, and from administrative units to cultural regions and stateless nations. Disciplines covered include history, sociology, social and political geography, political science and law. Interdisciplinary approaches are particularly welcome. In addition to empirical and comparative studies, books focus on the theory of regionalism and federalism, including normative questions about democracy and accountability in complex systems of government. L’État-nation contemporain a subi une série de transformations qui remettent en cause son rôle traditionnel de cadre pour les systèmes sociaux, politiques et économiques. Des nouveaux espaces ont émergé avec la mise en place de systèmes de production régionaux, le développement des mouvements pour l’autonomie territoriale et la redécouverte des anciennes identités aussi bien que l’invention de nouvelles. Les États ont répondu à ces mutations par la restructuration de leurs systèmes de gouvernement territoriaux, le plus souvent par l’instauration d’un niveau intermédiaire ou régional. Il n’y a pas de modèle unique mais bien une gamme allant de la décentralisation administrative à la fédéralisation. Certains États se sont régionalisés de manière uniforme, tandis que d’autres ont adopté des solutions asymétriques. Dans plusieurs cas, les régions ont dépassé le cadre des États-nations, cherchant à devenir des acteurs au sein des systèmes continentaux et transnationaux. La collection s’intéresse à toute étude concernant cette restructuration territoriale, incluant le développement des systèmes de production régionaux, le régionalisme politique, les questions d’identité et les changements constitutionnels. The legal and political significance of human rights has increased enormously at the international and European levels. It has become increasingly clear that the respect and promotion of human rights must be at the centre of States and local communities' public policies and that human rights are the basis of civil society initiatives and movements. There is a large mechanism, at all levels of governance, monitoring the way in which States implement the obligations they have assumed towards each person under their sovereignty. The Italian Yearbook of Human Rights Series provides year by year, a dynamic and up-to date overview of the measures Italy has taken to adapt its legislation and policies in line with international human rights law and to comply with the commitments voluntarily assumed by the Italian Government at the international level. The book series thus intends to contribute to the continuous monitoring activity of the human rights situation in Italy undertaken at the local, national and international levels by the relevant intergovernmental and civil society actors. Each volume of this series surveys the activities carried out, during the year of reference, by the relevant national and local Italian actors, including governmental bodies, civil society organisations and universities. It also presents reports and recommendations that have been addressed to Italy by international monitoring bodies within the framework of the United Nations, the Council of Europe and the European Union. Finally, each Yearbook provides a selection of examples from international and national case law that cast light on Italy’s position vis-à-vis internationally recognised human rights. The Yearbook is edited by the Human Rights Centre of the University of Padua, in cooperation with the UNESCO Chair in Human Rights, Democracy and Peace of the same university, and with the support of the Region of Veneto. The Centre, established in 1982, carries out research and education following a global and interdisciplinary approach. It hosts the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on intercultural dialogue, human rights and multi-level governance.

La collection « Action publique » étudie le fonctionnement de l’État sous des angles multiples. Elle privilégie l’analyse des politiques publiques (environnement, santé, emploi, culture, etc.) et l’étude institutionnelle et organisationnelle des administrations publiques. Les mutations qui caractérisent aujourd’hui l’action publique (déréglementation, externalisation, contractualisation, action en réseaux ...) sont au cœur de ses préoccupations. Ainsi la collection « Action publique » accorde-t-elle également une place importante aux rapports que l’État entretient avec son environnement, l’appareil politique et la société civile bien sûr, mais aussi avec les évolutions sociétales plus larges (individualisme, globalisation, etc.). La pluridisciplinarité est une caractéristique essentielle des travaux contemporains dans le domaine. C’est pourquoi cette collection encourage les approches économiques, historiques, juridiques, politologiques, sociologiques et philosophiques. The series « Public Action » studies the State and how it works from a variety of perspectives. It focuses on public policy analysis (environment, health, employment culture, etc.) as well as the institutional and organizational study of public administrations. The mutations that characterize nowadays public action (deregulation, externalisation, contractualisation and networking) are at the heart of these preoccupations. Consequently, the series « Public Action » also places further emphasis on the relationship the State maintains with its environment; – not only the political apparatus and, of course, civil society, but also with broader social changes such as individualism and globalization. Multidisciplinary work is an essential characteristic of contemporary research in the field. Given the essential need for such approaches to the topic, this series encourages economic, historical, judicial, politological, sociological and philosophical perspectives.

Diversitas

The aim of this series is to study diversity by privileging an interdisciplinary approach, through political, legal, cultural and social frameworks. The proposed method of inquiry will be to appeal, at once, to the fields of political philosophy, law, political science, history and sociology. In a period characterized by the increasing diversity of contemporary societies, the authors published in this series will explore avenues for the accommodation and management of pluralism and identity. Such studies will not be limited to assessments of federal states, but will include states that are on the path to federalization as well as non-federal states. Serious efforts will be undertaken to enrich our comprehension of so-called ‘nations without states’, most notably Catalonia, Scotland, Flanders and Quebec. A point of emphasis will also be placed on extracting lessons from experiences with civil law relative to those cases marked by the common law tradition. Monist and competing models will be compared in order to assess the relative capacity of each model to provide responses to the question of political instability, while pursuing the quest for justice in minority societies. The series also addresses the place of cities in the management of diversity, as well as the question of migration more generally and the issue of communities characterized by overlapping and hybrid identities. A profound sensitivity to historical narratives is also expected to enrich the proposed scientific approach. Finally, the works published in this series will reveal a common aspiration to advance social and political debates without privileging any particular school of thought. Cette collection cherche à étudier la diversité sous les angles politique, juridique, culturel et social en privilégiant le prisme de l’interdisciplinarité. La démarche scientifique proposée fait appel à la fois à la philosophie politique, au droit, à la science politique, à l’histoire, de même qu’à la sociologie. Au moment où les sociétés sont de plus en plus traversées par la diversité, les auteurs publiés dans cette collection exploreront des avenues en vue de gérer le pluralisme communautaire et identitaire. Sont mis à l’étude tout aussi bien les pays fédéraux et les pays en voie de fédéralisation que les pays non fédéraux. Des efforts importants seront consentis afin d’enrichir notre compréhension des nations dites «　sans État　» – pensons à la Catalogne, à l’Écosse, à la Flandre, au Pays basque et au Québec. Une volonté affirmée de mettre en parallèle les enseignements tirés des expériences civilistes et de celles propres au droit coutumier sera au rendez-vous. Les modèles monistes et concurrents seront mis dos à dos afin de saisir la capacité propre à chacun de fournir des réponses à l’instabilité politique tout en poursuivant la quête de justice pour les sociétés minoritaires. La place des métropoles au chapitre de la gestion de la diversité retiendra notre attention de même que les questions de migration des populations et du métissage communautaire. Une sensibilité à la trame historique viendra enrichir la démarche scientifique proposée. "The series is intended as a collection of original and critical political-philosophicalworks as well as interdisciplinary studies on contemporary trends within democracy, its counter-actors, and transparent–global market players. Authors representing various backgrounds and standpoints are encouraged in order to engage in the political philosophy; theoretical and mathematical analyses on politics; cyber society; environments; economics; civil, constitutional, and international law (e.g. legal transplants); human rights; social psychology; and sociology. The series used to collect the best global achievements and standards. Accordingly, the series has been provided in Spanish, Japanese, [Modern] Greek, German, French, and English but all double-peer-reviewed and accepted manuscripts should contain an English translation of its detailed contents and a résumé written in English. The world of the social has been rich enough to suggest no leading theoretical standpoint and no approaches of investigations are expected as imposed to the subject but normative studies on changing democracy and systems of differences and adjustments are not preferred because every non-changeable thing/idea disappears."
