  • Literary and Cultural Studies, Theory and the (New) Media

    ISSN: 0935-4093

    Literary and Cultural Studies, Theory and the (New) Media provides a forum for discussions on a variety of topics in literary, cultural, and media studies. Open to comparatist approaches, the series main venue is in anglophone literature and media, with a special emphasis on narratological, postcolonial, film and media studies. Dedicated to promoting innovative and theoretically informed analyses, the series publishes monographs as well as edited volumes versed in media and literary theory. It also encourages explorations within, as well as dialogues between, narratological, postcolonial, feminist and queer approaches. Other theoretical approaches (stylistics, New Historicism, ecocriticism, etc.) are welcome as are works on literary and cultural theory. All volumes in the series are peer-reviewed. Monographs: Only complete manuscripts are accepted for review. Edited volumes: A proposal with two essays is solicited; a final decision will be taken after all the essays have been submitted in their final form.   • Transatlantic Aesthetics and Culture

    This series hosts works coming from both sides of the Atlantic that offer multicultural and interdisciplinary perspectives on modern literary, aesthetic, and cultural issues. It embraces studies of literature, theatre, cinema, visual arts, or dance. Defamiliarizing subjects by adopting an outsider’s view or bringing to bear different aesthetic or theoretical discourses on particular cultural spheres are among the privileged approaches of Transatlantic Aesthetics and Culture. The series aims to foster dialogue and encourage different cultural and critical discourses. It welcomes monographs and collections of essays. Contributors are invited to submit projects to the editors.

  • German Visual Culture

    German Visual Culture invites research on German art across different periods, geographical locations, and political contexts. Books in the series engage with aesthetic and ideological continuities as well as ruptures and divergences between individual artists, movements, systems of art education, art institutions, and cultures of display. Challenging scholarship that interrogates and updates existing orthodoxies in the field is desirable. A guiding question of the series is the impact of German art on critical and public spheres, both inside and outside the German-speaking world. Reception is thus conceived in the broadest possible terms, including both the ways in which art has been perceived and defined as well as the ways in which modern and contemporary German artists have undertaken visual dialogues with their predecessors or contemporaries. Issues of cultural transfer, critical race theory and related postcolonial analysis, feminism, queer theory, and other interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged, as are studies on production and consumption, especially the art market, pioneering publishing houses, and the ‘little magazines’ of the avant-garde. All proposals for monographs and edited collections in the history of German visual culture will be considered, although English will be the language of all contributions. Submissions are subject to rigorous peer review. The series will be promoted through the series editor’s Research Forum for German Visual Culture (https://www.eca.ed.ac.uk/research/research-forum-german-visual-culture), which he founded at the University of Edinburgh in 2011, and which has involved various symposia and related publications, all connected to an international network of Germanist scholars.

  • Russian Transformations: Literature, Culture and Ideas

    Russian Transformations publishes studies across the entire extent of Russian literature, thought and culture from the medieval period to the present. The series gives special emphasis to the kinds of transformation that characterise Russian, Soviet and post-Soviet writing. Transformation has often been under the stimulus of (and resistance to) foreign traditions. Acts of cross-cultural and cross-literary reception mark Russia's sense of creative development and national identity. Transformation has often been the result of the on-going dialogues between writers working within the Russian literary tradition through polemic and subtle use of intertextuality. Similarly, the stunning political and social changes that have been characteristic of Russian history generated radical transformation in the institutions of literature and in forms of literature from Modernism to post-Perestroika as writers react to official policy on freedom of expression.

  • Intersections in Communications and Culture

    Global Approaches and Transdisciplinary Perspectives

    This series publishes a wide range of new critical scholarship, particularly works that seek to engage with and transcend the disciplinary isolationism and genre confinement that characterizes so much of contemporary research in communication studies and related fields. The Editors are particularly interested in manuscripts that address the broad intersections, movement, and hybrid trajectories that currently define the encounters between human groups in modern institutions and societies. The way these dynamic intersections are coded and represented in contemporary popular cultural forms and in the organization of knowledge is also explored in this series. Works that emphasize methodological nuance, texture, and dialogue across traditions and disciplines (communications, feminist studies, area and ethnic studies, arts, humanities, sciences, education, philosophy, etc.) are particularly welcome, as are projects that explore the dynamics of variation, diversity, and discontinuity in local and international settings. Topics covered by this series include (but are not limited to): multidisciplinary media studies; cultural studies; gender, race, and class; postcolonialism; globalization; diaspora studies; border studies; popular culture; art and representation; body politics; governing practices; histories of the present; health (policy) studies; space and identity; (im)migration; global ethnographies; public intellectuals; world music; virtual identity studies; queer theory; critical multiculturalism.

  • Philosophy and Cultural Studies Revisited / Historisch-genetische Studien zur Philosophie und Kulturgeschichte

    The main purposes of this series are philological and philosophical analytical reconstructions, and reinterpretations of philosophical writings. Under the terms "reconstruction" and "reinterpretation" is understood that such approach foregrounds the primary, alive philosophical idea. We assume that a precise philological analysis of source texts with the new analysis of philosophical concepts they are based on, can reveal meanings that have been obscured and distorted by the subsequent translations and interpretations. Without undermining the importance of the philosophical tradition, we ask what the authors have told us in their own language. We start with the strictly hermeneutic methodology: source texts are placed in the historical background, as they are not rigid constructs, but lively voices in a broader dialogue. Our object is to bring out the original meaning of texts. The language of the publication of the series is both English and German.

    "EUROSINICA is a book series for monographs of various thematic focuses, sharing the goal of studying culture and literature in contemporary or historical contexts. The series, under the imprint of Peter Lang, was founded in 1984 by the German sinologist Günther Debon (1921–2005) and the Canadian comparatist Adrian Hsia (1938–2010); so far, thirteen books have been published. While the founding editors placed the emphasis on the transfer processes of classical literary works and motifs between cultures, the continuation of their work requires new approaches. Rather than operate within the conceptual framework of “cultural dialogue” between an East and a West viewed as distinct entities, the series editors tend to a view of cultures in contact. EUROSINICA is accordingly open for studies and interpretation of authors, personalities, genres and individual works committed to an understanding of humanity as a common source of values which, rather than be impeded by cultural, linguistic or ethnic disparity, are being reshaped and reinvented in different settings. From the basic concept the series’ founders have contributed, we will carry on the approach to literature, the arts and history as transnational narratives emerging out of distinct contextualization and relying on as well as contributing to both the European and the Sinic cultural spheres. We explicitly welcome well-argued innovative interpretations of classical works, as we do historical and translation studies. At a time of ongoing global changes of aesthetic and critical paradigms, EUROSINICA does not intend to propose the East-West-paradigm as a last refuge for intellectual cultural conservatism, but rather envisages new critical approaches to the sporadic process of aesthetic and historical interactions (“contacts”) between formerly allegedly “separated” cultural spheres. For Authors EUROSINICA expects to publish between one and two volumes annually and aims for a balance between studies of contemporary or ancient focus. It thereby seeks to counter the trend of separating research on classical and modern issues. EUROSINICA will consider manuscripts in European languages. The series editors and board members are scholars at universities in the Baltic and Nordic countries of Europe, as well as in mainland China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao.   • Exile Studies

    Exile Studies is a series of monographs and edited collections that takes a broad view of exile, including the life and work of refugees from National Socialism, and beyond. The series explores the different global and cultural spaces of exile and refuge as well as the specific historical, political and social concerns of exile writers and artists. The series engages with recent theoretical approaches to exile to shed new light on the unique conditions of mass flight from National Socialist persecution, with a particular interest in the work of Jewish refugees of the period. A plurality of theoretical approaches is encouraged, featuring research that reaches beyond national frameworks or disciplinary boundaries and takes multi-directional, transcultural or comparative approaches. The series aims to make connections to studies on more recent groups of refugees and to contribute to current debates. Themes include persecution, exclusion and delocalization, legacies of displacement, loss and acculturation as well as the creation of new homes and networks. The series promotes dialogue among transnational, Jewish and memory studies, and among diaspora, Holocaust and postcolonial studies. It invites research that acknowledges questions of gender, race, class, religion and ethnicity as indispensable tools for understanding the cultural processes connected to the lives and works of refugees and exiles.

    DASK presents a forum for linguistic research on the interrelationship between language and culture. The series is interdisciplinary in nature and consists of monographs and collections of papers. The main purpose of the editors is to initiate a dialogue between linguistic science and neighbouring disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, semiotics, literary studies and intercultural communication. The aim of establishing a series at the intersection of linguistic and cultural studies is to provide academics and interested students with a scientific framework for studying the interaction of language and culture. The series has been founded by Ulrich Ammon, René Dirven and Martin Pütz.

The term transcription acknowledges that all cultures engage in acts of translating and transforming performed, spoken, written, or digitalized languages, images, and sounds from one medium into another; it also refers, more specifically, to processes of encoding and transferring genetic information.   • Europe des cultures / Europe of cultures

    "Europe of Cultures" is a series of studies, monographs, stories, research projects, reports on conferences and debates devoted to the complexities and changing realities in European societies. It bridges the past with the future at the cross road of challenges and opportunities of the transformation of European societies. The management of changes in societies refers to the interconnection of various dimensions and levels of policy-making impacting on economic, social, political, democratic, communication, philosophical, artistic, religious as well as ethical traditions and behaviour. As an editorial project the series is structured along two interconnected and complementary sub-series: i.e. the "(Europe of) Dialogues" series and the "(Europe of) Living Stories". The sub-series "(Europe of) Dialogues" mainly deals with (cultural) diversities, identity and citizenship building in Europe as well as with the relevant multi-level governance and communication structures in the transformation of European societies. Europe is a laboratory for understanding this multi- and intercultural reality. The purpose is to contribute to a better understanding and communication of the changes taking place by looking at the European societies in general, and the specificities of different national, regional and local cultures and communities in a framework of dialogues. The series presents interdisciplinary and critical views of value-driven and policy-oriented reflections. Moreover, it offers new insights into understanding how to manage, value and communicate cultural diversity, identity and citizenship. It also wants to contribute to the development of new ways of "living together", in which cultures and communities are perceived as binding forces in creative society building. The sub-series "(Europe of) Living Stories" (the former "Mémoires de l’Europe en devenir", Director Gabriel Fragnière) is devoted to inspiring narratives for a broad public with a view to contribute to a better understanding, communication and contextualisation of the newly emerging Europe.   • Leeds-Swansea Colloquia on Contemporary German Literature

    The Leeds Colloquia on Contemporary German Literature series is the successor to the Bradford Series of Colloquia on Contemporary German Literature. Like its precursor, the Leeds Series has as its focal point of departure a three-day, biennial colloquium devoted to a particular theme. The colloquia have been supported by a range of cultural institutions over the years including the Goethe Institut, Austrian Cultural Forum and Modern Humanities Research Association, enabling them to act as a forum for dialogue between Germanisten in the German-speaking world and established and aspiring scholars based in the UK, Ireland, the USA and Australia. It is of equal importance that a broad understanding of what constitutes literary writing is fostered. Thus while ‘canonical’ literary figures have always featured, there has been a commitment to new writing which has given rise to the first academic discussions in English of several significant contemporary writers. The organising editors are Professor Julian Preece (University of Wales, Swansea) and Professor Frank Finlay (University of Leeds) who work in tandem with an international Advisory Board. The colloquia have been supported by a range of cultural institutions over the years including the Goethe Institut, Austrian Cultural Forum and Modern Humanities Research Association, enabling them to act as a forum for dialogue between Germanisten in the German-speaking world and established and aspiring scholars based in the UK, Ireland, the USA and Australia. It is of equal importance that a broad understanding of what constitutes literary writing is fostered. Thus while ‘canonical’ literary figures have always featured, there has been a commitment to new writing which has given rise to the first academic discussions in English of several significant contemporary writers. The organising editors are Professor Julian Preece (University of Wales, Swansea) and Professor Frank Finlay (University of Leeds) who work in tandem with an international Advisory Board.

    This newly launched series creates the opportunity for those scholars who, on the one hand, wish to see literary works in the unceasing dialogue with other arts and, on the other, want to rethink literary theory in terms of its embededness in the reflection which involves notions crucial for the shape of contemporary human community such as democracy, justice, friendship, hospitality, home, passions, and many others. Thus we invite essays on a wide range of topics which include studies of individual texts placing them in a rich web of comparative references not turning away from the body-politic, interpretations of texts and images as important ways towards the formation of cultural identity, explorations of the dialogue between the word and the image with the complicated transpositions taking place in the process, as well as in-depth investigations of particular notions in their historical and multicultural contexts. The analyses undertaken by the authors in this series will make a serious contribution to a better understanding of the notions and processes constituting our being together.     Among the broad structural transformation processes at the global level, the international legal recognition of human rights occupies an exceptionally prominent position. The dimensions of this process include standard setting, the functioning of sophisticated machineries for the promotion and protection of human rights, the development of a specific international case-law as well as new priorities of the political agenda. The human rights paradigm is at the heart of a new set of interrelated principles, which are equally valid at both the domestic and the international levels – such as the rule of law, democratic principles and the responsibility to protect – and of great strategic visions, as human development and human security. New functions, such as human rights monitoring, election observation, fact-finding and inquiry have already been admitted to international practice. This series intends to foster the publication of volumes that investigate the multiple facets of a strongly evolving reality, and stimulate the production of new and innovative ideas.     This series welcomes and encourages the dialogue between demography and family studies to revitalize social history as well as sociology and population studies. An international network of scholars based at the Laboratory of Demography and Family Studies of the University of Geneva has initiated an open-minded series that seeks to reflect the latest developments in research. The collection emphasizes comparative and international perspectives, as well as interdisciplinary approaches drawing from history, economics, statistics, sociology, geography, demography, and cultural anthropology. Innovative methodologies for both qualitative and quantitative analysis which allow authors to reformulate old problems and ask new questions are particular welcome. The series publishes both individual and collective volumes. The first group encompasses case studies or monographs coming from the Swiss or the international scientific world, including the best Ph.D. dissertations. The second group refers to collective volumes organized around a topic emerging from a scientific debate, with contributions from various disciplinary fields and/or geographic horizons. Cette collection a pour ambition d’accueillir et de promouvoir le dialogue entre les démographes et les spécialistes de la famille, dialogue qui renouvelle profondément tant l’histoire sociale que la sociologie contemporaine.     MeLiS is dedicated to media science, literature and linguistics from a cultural perspective. It also deals with issues derived from anthropology, the media, society, history and aesthetics. The cornerstone of MeLiS is an extended and descriptive interpretation of culture. The ability to decipher specific cultural derivatives and phenomena is dependent on time, space, the relevant context, and the disciplinary environment of the respective observer. MeLiS presents research approaches from various disciplines for discussion. A perspective that transcends trans-disciplinary or national-philological borders and promotes reflective dialogue among the academic disciplines is therefore expressly encouraged. MeLiS ist der kulturwissenschaftlichen Ausrichtung in den Medien-, Literatur- und Sprachwissenschaften verpflichtet. Dies schließt auch anthropologische, mediale, soziale, historische und ästhetische Fragestellungen ein. MeLiS legt einen erweiterten, deskriptiven Kulturbegriff zugrunde. Die Entschlüsselung spezifischer kultureller Erzeugnisse und Phänomene ist abhängig von Zeit, Raum, dem jeweiligen Kontext und dem disziplinären Umfeld des jeweiligen Betrachters. MeLiS stellt Forschungsansätze aus verschiedenen Fachdisziplinen zur Diskussion.     Dans le panorama de la recherche et, plus particulièrement, de l’hispanisme, un nouveau paradigme privilégiant la prise en considération des échanges et de la circulation de modèles s’affirme. Cette nouvelle perspective permet l’émergence d’un nouveau champ d’études centré sur les relations transatlantiques, transnationales et intercontinentales ; elle met l’accent sur les échanges, les migrations et les passages qui se déclinent de différentes façons entre les cultures des deux côtés de l’Atlantique, depuis plus de cinq siècles. Plus que le paquebot de ligne destiné à la traversée régulière entre l’Europe et l’Amérique, le titre de cette Collection « Trans-Atlántico / Trans-Atlantique » évoque le roman homonyme de Witold Gombrowicz – où apparait justement le trait d’union –, les déambulations du protagoniste entre deux mondes, ainsi que les rapprochements entre des lieux bien différents d’une même réalité (la Pologne, où Gombrowicz est né, et l’Argentine, lieu de son séjour prolongé). La Collection « Trans-Atlántico / Trans-Atlantique » se veut un espace d’édition ouvert aux travaux qui privilégient cette approche de la littérature comme lieu transculturel par excellence, lieu de dialogue et de controverse entre différents types de discours, lieu, enfin, de tous les possibles, où s’élaborent de nouvelles pratiques de pensée et de création pour donner du sens à l’en-dehors qui l’entoure.     Patrizia Delpiano (Turin), Fabio Forner (Verona), Giovanni Iamartino (Milan), Sabine Schwarze (Augsburg), Corrado Viola (Verona) The book series is dedicated to the study, in an interdisciplinary approach, of periodicals and newspapers published in Europe from the 17th century to the present. The periodical press played a key role in cultural exchange, public debate, and knowledge transfer. Periodicals became essential elements in the construction and development of a communication network that enabled an open dialogue among the learned people of Europe and the circulation of knowledge among an increasingly wide readership. La collana è dedicata allo studio, in una prospettiva interdisciplinare, dei periodici e dei giornali pubblicati in Europa dal XVII secolo a oggi. La stampa periodica giocò un ruolo chiave nello scambio culturale, nel dibattito pubblico e nella trasmissione della conoscenza. I periodici furono infatti essenziali per la costruzione e lo sviluppo di una rete di comunicazione che consentì un dialogo aperto tra le persone di cultura in tutta Europa e la circolazione del sapere all’interno di un pubblico di lettori sempre più ampio. La collection est consacrée à l’étude, dans une approche interdisciplinaire, des périodiques et des journaux en Europe à partir du XVIIe siècle à nos jours. La presse périodique jouait un rôle clé dans les échanges culturels, le débat public et le transfert de connaissances. Les périodiques devenaient des éléments essentiels dans la construction et le développement d'un réseau de communication qui permettait un dialogue ouvert entre les intellectuels d’Europe en plus de favoriser la circulation des connaissances parmi un public toujours plus vaste. Die Buchreihe widmet sich in einer interdisziplinären Ausrichtung der Erforschung von Zeitschriften und Zeitungen in Europa vom 17. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart. Die periodische Presse spielte eine Schlüsselrolle für den kulturellen Austausch, die öffentliche Debatte und den Wissenstransfer. Periodika wurden zu wesentlichen Elementen im Aufbau und in der Entwicklung eines Kommunikations-netzes, das einen offenen Dialog zwischen den Gelehrten Europas und die Verbreitung von Wissen unter einer breiteren Leserschaft ermöglichte.

  • Fem-Mobilities: Feminismos y Movilidades

    Contemporary migrations take place within the framework of varied geographical, social and symbolic mobilities with strong implications in terms of inequality and global stratification. Throughout history, women have always migrated, but their presence has been invisible or shown in a selective, partial and biased way (Morokvasic, 2011), which presents them more as dependents, sufferers and victims, than as protagonists of the migration. After decades of struggle for the development and implantation of feminist and gender studies in academia and the impact of the broad women's movement at a global level, today we are witnessing the consolidation of a "field" of studies, that of "gender and gender. migrations ». Feminist approaches have provided a set of concepts and categories of analysis that have contributed to restoring the agency of women in general, and in particular, the agency of migrant women. The diverse feminist perspectives allow us to understand how migrations politically, historically and contextually produce gender, the factors of production of political, economic and socio-cultural inequalities that affect the lives of migrant women, as well as the variety of their experiences, their positions and their identities. The FEM-MOBILITIES series is a space for the publication of works that focus on these feminist themes, approaches and perspectives on migration and refuge, with the aim of constituting a place for dialogue and debate, but also for constructive controversy around to the main axes of production of inequality and the ways to combat them. Las migraciones contemporáneas tienen lugar en el marco de movilidades geográficas, sociales y simbólicas variadas con fuertes implicaciones en términos de desigualdad y de estratificación global. A lo largo de la historia, las mujeres siempre han migrado, pero su presencia ha sido invisibilizada o mostrada de manera selectiva, parcial y sesgada (Morokvasic, 2011), lo que las presentan más como dependientes, sufrientes y víctimas, que como protagonistas de la migración. Tras décadas de lucha para el desarrollo e implantación de los estudios feministas y de género en la academia y de la incidencia del movimiento amplio de mujeres a nivel global, hoy asistimos a la consolidación de un «campo» de estudios, el de «género y migraciones».   • Global Intersectionality of Education, Sports, Race, and Gender

    This series responds to the interesting dialogue and unique social phenomena in the global context produced by the intersections of race, sport, gender, and culture. Global Intersectionality explores these intersections and expands the literature on how each inform our thinking around certain dominant ideologies. This series examines how sporting practices in the U.S. are becoming the global norm in defining what is sport, thus our understanding of race, gender, and culture. The purpose is to inform sport enthusiasts, college students— undergraduate or graduate— educators, researchers, policy makers, and other stakeholders—who are social justice oriented— about the role sport has in contributing to informing cultural ideology, reproducing and reinforcing race and gender ideologies. It also seeks to foster an understanding of how this social phenomenon, that is often situated as merely entertainment or a recreational activity for leisure, has shifted into a cultural practice that can engender global socio-political relations. The topics will include critical moments in sport, as well as broader social movements in sporting context. In addition, this series will dis- cuss topics ranging from youth to professional sporting experiences with attention given to the socialization and educational processes inherent in these experiences as it relates to race, gender, and culture—one title might explore the global sporting practices of Black women, another book topic will examine the sporting practices and the academic and athletic excellence achieved at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Or, for example, another topic might be examining the athletic migration patterns of African athletes to Europe and the U.S. The uniqueness of the titles in this series is that they will employ a variety of methodologies, including, but not limited to, qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods methodological approaches, non- empirical and socio-historical approaches that incorporate primary and secondary data sources.

It is especially interested in work which articulates aspects of Italy's particular, and in many respects, peculiar, interactions with notions of modernity and postmodernity, broadly understood. It also aims to encourage critical dialogue between new developments in scholarship in Italy and in the English-speaking world. The Italian Modernities series also includes the Panoramas sub-series. But this series will also include the voices of authors and activists who are involved in conflicts over material necessities in their communities, schools, places of worship, and public squares as part of an ongoing search for dignity, self-determination and autonomy. This series focuses on conflict and struggle within the realm of educational politics based around a series of interrelated themes: indigenous struggles; western-Islamic conflicts; globalization and the clash of worldviews; neoliberalism as the war within;colonization and neocolonization; the coloniality of power and decolonial pedagogy; war and conflict and the struggle for liberation. It publishes narrative accounts of specific struggles as well as theorizing "conflict narratives" and the political production of meaning in educational studies. During this time of global conflict and the crisis of capitalism, Education and Struggle promises to be on the cutting edge of social, cultural, educational and political transformation. Central to the series is the idea that language is essentially a dialogical production that is formed through a process of social conflict and interaction. The aim is to focus on key semiotic, literary andpolitical concepts as a basis for a philosophy of language and culture where the underlying materialist philosophy of language and culture serves as the basis for the larger project that we might call dialogism (after Bakhtin’s usage). As the late V.N. Volosinov suggests “Without signs there is no ideology”, “Everything ideological possesses semiotic value” and “individual consciousness is a socio-ideological fact”. It is a small step to claim, therefore, “consciousness itself can arise and become a viable fact only in the material embodiment of signs”. This series is a vehicle for materialist semiotics in the narrative and dialogue of education and struggle."
