Speech Production and Perception

Speech production is a complex sensorimotor task that requires the coordination of numerous physically complex and very different biological systems. Furthermore, it is a sophisticated cognitive task that transmits information between speakers and listeners. Speech perception uses multi-modal information combining visible articulatory movements and audible acoustic properties in an adaptive way. Understanding the cognitive, motor and sensory mechanisms that underlie speech production and perception is a fascinating objective that requires interdisciplinary competences in various research areas such as linguistics, perception, psychology, cognition, neuroscience, motor control, biology, aerodynamics, acoustics, and biomechanics. The aim of this book series is to investigate the various mechanisms underlying speech production and perception. Each issue of this series will be devoted to a specific topic. This topic will be addressed from different, sometimes even controversial perspectives. Tutorials, up-to-date scientific papers, methodological reports and outstanding dissertations will be at the core of the series. The intended readers are graduate students and scientists from various research disciplines interested in speech production and perception. Scholars are welcome to submit suitable works to the editors. All articles in edited volumes undergo a double-blind peer review. All dissertations undergo a close reading by the series editors and authors will be invited to revise where required.

"Visual communication is the process through which individuals in relationships, organizations, and cultures interpret and create visual messages in response to their environment, one another, and social structures. This series seeks to enhance our understanding of visual communication and it explores the role of visual communication in culture. Topics of interest include visual perception and cognition; signs and symbols; typography and image; research on graph ic design, use of visual imagery in education. On a cultural level, research on visual media analysis and critical methods that examine the larger cultural messages imbedded in visual images is welcome. By providing a variety of approaches to the analysis of visual media and messages, this book series is designed to explore issues relating to visual literacy, visual communication, visual rhetoric, visual culture, and any unique method for examining visual communication. Criminal Humanities & Forensic Semiotics

This series publishes monographs, anthologies, annotated literary editions, and comparative studies that critically engage the humanities as a locus for the study of criminal offending, criminal investigation, deviance, penology, and deterrence, as well as the epistemology of justice. We are especially interested in submissions with a strong interdisciplinary orientation and which lie at the crossroads of theory and practice. In other words, this series is foremost concerned with using artistic, literary, and multimedia texts, situations, and other products of the strictly non-investigative world as vehicles for exploring long-standing social and procedural issues of interest to both academia and the general public. By engaging a wide readership encompassing both scholars and practitioners, it is the intent of this series to breathe new life into the humanities and cultural studies, not to further alienate or obfuscate the scholarship done in these disciplines. For this reason, collaborations between authors representing academic institutions and those working in both private and public knowledge sectors, including government and specialized areas of law enforcement, are encouraged to collaborate with respect to this project. The series will publish studies and anthologies that explore the connection between fictional writing, movies, music, traditional electronic media, the Internet, and other domains of popular culture and how they have influenced the perception of crime and criminality. The synergy that exists between real crime (reality) and imagined criminality as manifesting itself through representations in writing and media is the primary focus of the series. We also welcome submissions that draw on any number of semiotic, linguistic, and comparative literature traditions, particularly those espousing new approaches to these fields and which allow key concepts to be unpacked within the framework of the criminal justice system, the forensic sciences, or other professions or institutions that serve the public interest.

International Healthcare Ethics

Issues in healthcare ethics affect almost every person all over the world. The immense leaps in science and technology, changes in the general perception of national and global interests, possible limits in resources, mass communication, and other possible limits in resources, mass communication, and other factors have currently engendered a stronger interest and concern with health. This may range from the commonly discussed issues of euthanasia, abortion, macro- and microallocation of resources, and mandatory AIDS testing to the less frequently addressed but still vital issues in pharmacology, genetic testing, screening and therapy, nursing, mental health, and public health. Books, articles, and scholarly studies appear frequently in many countries. In each, the literature tends to consider the ethics of healthcare issues in depth but from a standpoint defined by culture and nationality, and by national government policies and perspectives. Such a standpoint necessarily limits and excludes many potentially useful and innovative approaches to issues. The International Healthcare Ethics series presents a broad perspective on a wide range of healthcare issues and the exchange of ideas between cultures and nations to stimulate thought. It also offers a forum for addressing healthcare issues that can affect each of us on a global scale. Manuscripts are welcome from universities, bioethics centers, and healthcare organizations.

Theaomai – Studien zu den performativen Künsten

The Old Greek verb theaomai – looking both with the mind’s eye and the actual eye – since the very beginning of European theatre suggests a close relation between theatre and theory. Within the act of perception the spectators, theates, relate the things they hear and see to the site of their memory and psyche. Of all the arts those who reflect the process of perception in the aesthetic form itself are performative arts. This series publishes interdisciplinary studies between theatre- and media studies as well as studies on the visual arts that analyse the social and subjective potential of the aesthetic process of looking, hearing, and reading. Das altgriechische Verb theaomai – «mit dem geistigen wie konkreten Auge schauen» – legt seit den Anfängen des europäischen Theaters eine enge Beziehung von Theater und Theorie nahe. Diese wird vom Zuschauer theates über den Akt seiner Wahrnehmung geknüpft: er verbindet konkretes Hören und Sehen mit dem Schauplatz seines Gedächtnisses und seiner Psyche. Künste, die diesen Prozess des Wahrnehmens in der ästhetischen Form selbst reflektieren, somit Denken und sinnliche Teilnahme des Rezipienten fordern, um die Sinnpotentialitäten des ästhetischen Gegenstands zu realisieren, sind performative Künste. Die Reihe veröffentlicht interdisziplinäre Studien im Übergang von Theater-, Kunst- und Medienwissenschaft, die das gesellschafts- und subjektkritische Potential des Prozesses ästhetischer Zuschauer-, Hörer- oder Leserwahrnehmung untersuchen.

La collection a pour but la publication et la promotion de travaux originaux et inédits concernant les différentes conceptualisations philosophiques de la pensée physique et mathématique contemporaine. Plus qu'à décrire les faits empiriques par des méthodes et des outils purement quantitatifs, ces travaux doivent viser à proposer des modèles explicatifs qui permettent d'élucider un ou plusieurs aspects conceptuels de la création mathématique et de l'invention physique. Ainsi, on privilégiera les travaux qui accordent une place fondamentale au rôle des idéalisations géométriques dans l'intelligibilité du réel et même de phénomènes très concrets. La collection entend accueillir tout particulièrement les recherches qui explorent philosophiquement et approfondissent expérimentalement des idées essentielles à l'interface entre certaines théories mathématiques, notamment géométriques et topologiques, et les sciences de la nature comme la physique et la biologie, ou toute autre discipline théorique qui s'y rattache. Sa raison d'être réside dans l'exigence de repenser, selon une démarche philosophique à la fois critique et rigoureuse, les grandes découvertes scientifiques du XXe siècle qui ont changé en profondeur notre perception de la réalité, et de développer une réflexion autour des perspectives épistémologiques nouvelles qui s'en sont récemment dégagées. Un certain nombre d'études et de recherches récentes montrent l'intérêt de réactualiser des idées issues de ce qu'on appelait à une époque la tradition «scientifique» de la philosophie naturelle. Ceci a permis de renouer avec certaines théories élaborées par les Naturphilosophen, de réhabiliter les idées des fondateurs de la psychophysique, de reprendre les intuitions et les analyses des phénoménologues et théoriciens de la Gestalt, de développer la pensée des pionniers de la morphologie et de la biologie théorique. Un des buts de la collection est de permettre que ces idées soient développées, débattues et mieux connues d'un plus grand nombre de chercheurs et de lecteurs. Cette collection aspire à devenir un laboratoire d'idées: elle entend d'abord susciter l'élaboration d'une véritable «philosophie géométrique» des formes naturelles et des êtres organiques, ainsi que contribuer à renouveler les grands débats scientifiques et métaphysiques sur les concepts d'espace et de temps et sur leur rôle dans la compréhension des rapports entre les structures mathématiques et les phénomènes physiques. On souhaite aussi s'interroger sur les limites de la science actuelle et sur les conséquences que comportent ses récentes retombées technicistes. Il s'agit notamment de contribuer au développement d'une vision non réductionniste de la science et de la connaissance, moins pragmatique et plus spéculative, moins attachée à ses applications technologiques immédiates que soucieuse de construire une pluralité de modèles possibles du réel et d'en dévoiler les différents niveaux de sens. Nature, Science and the Arts is an international scholarly series dealing with the history of cultural interplay between arts, humanities, natural sciences and technology, both on the level of theoretical reflection and in artistic enunciations. It is not restricted to any particular epoch, society, medium or region. By publishing contributions to this new interdisciplinary research area, the series illuminates the traditional connection between two ways of interpreting the world, a connection that has been largely marginalized since Wilhelm Dilthey’s strict dissociation between humanities and natural sciences. Nature, Science et les Arts est une collection scientifique internationale qui explore l’histoire des interactions entre la culture des sciences humaines et artistiques et celle des sciences naturelles et techniques, au niveau de la réflexion théorique et de l’articulation artistique. Elle s’intéresse pour cela à toutes les époques, formes de sociétés, médias et régions. La collection présente des études sur ces nouveaux domaines de recherche et illustre le lien traditionnel entre deux perceptions du monde qui ont été très largement marginalisées depuis la stricte séparation opérée par Wilhem Diltheys entre les sciences humaines et naturelles. Natur, Wissenschaft und die Künste ist eine internationale Wissenschaftsreihe, welche die Geschichte des Zusammenwirkens geisteswissenschaftlich-künstlerischer und naturwissenschaftlich-technischer Kultur auf der Ebene theoretischer Reflektion und künstlerischer Artikulation untersucht. Dabei gibt es keine Beschränkungen auf bestimmte Epochen, Gesellschaftsformen, Medien oder Regionen. Die Reihe stellt Untersuchungen aus diesem neuen wissenschaftlichen Forschungsgebiet vor und veranschaulicht den traditionellen Zusammenhang zweier Formen der Weltdeutung, welcher seit Wilhelm Diltheys strenger Trennung von Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften weitestgehend marginalisiert wurde.
