History and Philosophy of Science

This series invites book proposals that include innovative strategies for pursuing history and philosophy of science. Especially welcome are scholarly works using non-analytic philosophical perspectives to successfully bring to bear on our understanding of how scientific practices are related to the humanities and the social sciences. The series also welcomes exploration of the sciences in relation to gender, culture, society, and the intellectual and social contexts that illuminate the places, the structures of origination, and the patterns of development over generations. Approaches may include focused analyses of thinkers from unorthodox perspectives that can shed new light on the history and philosophy of science, such as Montaigne, Bruno, Galileo, Newton, Pascal, Emerson, Thoreau, Nietzsche, Jung, Freud. Proposals aimed at probing the philosophical intersections between the sciences and other societal practices that can be configured as heretic are also encouraged. These might include the emergence of the psychoanalytic movements in the twentieth century, how the fine arts have impinged on the historical processes that gave rise to the sciences over the last few centuries, how in turn the intellectual frameworks inaugurated by the sciences have been imported into the avant-garde movements that paralleled the advent of industrialized societies, and finally how contemporary scientific domains of knowledge reverberate in ’deviant’ social and artistic practices.

This series welcomes publications of European and also non-European scholars who specialize in theology, philosophy and history of religions. The series is intended to promote internationalization of the results of academic research on theological, philosophical and historical-religious questions. Contributions to the series may deal with both particular, narrow-range problems and synthetic, interdisciplinary issues. Likewise, the publications may refer to both systematic problems and more practical considerations. Studies in Philosophy, History of Ideas and Modern Societies

Until the publication of volume 21 the title of the series was "Polish Contemporary Philosophy and Philosophical Humanities". The series aspires to present a wide and relevant overview of best Polish works in philosophy and philosophical parts of the major fields of the humanities: political and social sciences, history, religious studies or what is named in Poland "the history of ideas". The subsequent editions of books within this series are either re-editions of the works previously published in non-Polish versions, or new translations from Polish. Some books contain extended works, other ones provide collections of smaller papers. Some of the authors presented in the series are widely acknowledged and regarded to be the "classics" of Polish intellectual life in the second half of the 20th Century, others are recognized as outstanding professors today. The quality and fame of the works and authors presented in the series are the only criteria for inclusion. The series is open to all streams of Polish philosophy: from analytical philosophy, through phenomenology and hermeneutics, to existential or religious philosophies. Also the word "philosophy" should be understood very widely in this case.

Lawrence Krader’s Legacy in Science, History and Philosophy

Lawrence Krader (1920-1998) was an American philosopher and anthropologist best known for his empirical work among the various indigenous peoples of Central Asia; his transcription, editing and publication of Karl Marx’s ethnological notebooks; his work on the formation of the state; and his theory of labor and value, in which he critically traced the history of objective value theory from Aristotle to Marx and the Marxists, and attempted to bring it into line with the subjective value theory from Böhm-Bawerk, to von Mises and von Hayek. Just prior to his death Krader expressed his desire to establish a research project in conjunction with Cyril Levitt at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The Lawrence Krader Research Project was officially established in April 2008 to edit, introduce and publish Krader's many unpublished works. The first years of the series will focus on these unpublished manuscripts. Subsequnetly the series will include works by others who have taken up Krader’s ideas critically in their own work. The editors particularly welcome manuscripts that develop a serious critical appraisal of Krader’s works. At the same time, they also welcome the work of those newly minted or seasoned scholars who take up some of the questions raised by Krader in his various works.

Der Umbruch von 1989/90 hat eine Zäsur geschaffen, die eine Verifikation der Bilder von unserer eigenen Geschichte und von der Geschichte der Beziehungen der Polen zu ihren Nachbarn ermöglicht. The Yearbook on History and Interpretation of Phenomenology

“The Yearbook on History and Interpretation of Phenomenology” is a peer-reviewed annual. It includes contributions about the history of phenomenology because phenomenology has its own specific development anchored in the texts of Edmund Husserl, his predecessors and followers, its distinctive themes and problems set within the frame of the philosophical and scientific discussions of their period. The yearbook is open to inquiries about the interpretation of phenomenology and to different approaches towards understanding phenomenological research, its systematic and methodological insights and its possible contributions to contemporary discussions both about pure philosophy and within the context of more interdisciplinary research. It is also open to broader discussions with other philosophical schools of thought. Volume 5 terminates the series.

In the series Realms of Judaism, founded in 1979, research studies from the fields of Jewish history, culture, religion, literature, philosophy and philology are published. Although the research areas cover the times from Antiquity to Early Modernity, Pre-modern Judaism constitutes the main focus of the series. The geographical space encompasses the Near and Middle East and European Judaism likewise. The editors of the series are scholars with various specialisations within the area of Jewish studies. "Catholic Thought from Lublin is a monograph series devoted to Lublin philosophy and its applications. Books in the series represent the major voices in this school and address a broad range of philosophical subjects. Essentially, Lublin philosophy is the latest systematic presentation and interpretation of Thomistic thought. It was introduced in Poland after World War II. This is a series of red-hot women's writing after the "isms." lt focuses on new cultural assemblages that are emerging from the deformation, breakout, ebullience, and discomfort of postmodern feminism. The series brings together a post-foundational generation of women's writing that, while still respectful of the idea of situated knowledge, does not rely on neat disciplinary distinctions and stable political coalitions. This writing transcends some of the more awkward textual performances of a first generation of "ferninism-meets-postmodernism" scholarship. lt has come to terms with its own body of knowledge as shifty, inflammatory, and ungovernable, The aim of the series is to make this cutting edge thinking more readily available to undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers and new academics, and professional bodies and practitioners. The Asian American Studies series will continue to contribute to an understanding of the long neglected history, rich cultural heritage, and present position of Asian Americans in society. The series encompasses studies on all aspects of the Asian American experience, and we are committed to expanding the traditions of knowledge within the field to address vast Asian American epistemologies, communities, activities, and practices. We are looking for work which explores various facets of a transnational perspective including for example: diaspora, displacement and migratory identities, cultural hybridity, transculturation, comparative race studies, contemporary community issues, immigration politics, nationalisms, and representation. While seeking the highest standards of scholarship, the Asian American Studies series is thus a broad forum for research on diverse and complex Asian American issues. The Asian American Studies series is committed to interdisciplinary and cross cultural scholarship. The series scope is primarily in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Humanism, which is characterized by the special status of human beings within the world, i.e. human beings do not differ gradually but categorically from other natural beings, is in a crisis. It gets attacked from various directions. Basically, it is possible to distinguish two main movements which try to transcend Humanism: Trans- and Posthumanism. Repenser le cinéma / Rethinking Cinema

The main purpose of the «Rethinking Cinema» series is to provide film scholars as well as professionals from the audiovisual field with innovative research material in the field of film aesthetics, theory and history. Many areas of last century’s main attraction are still there to be rediscovered or have seldom been approached in the past. Consequently, priority is given to film concepts, genres, works or authors which have not been frequently dealt with. Conference proceedings, collections of essays, revised doctoral theses or monographs are published and have to distinguish themselves by a considerable degree of originality, audacity and scientific rigour, without neglecting the transdisciplinary and cross-cultural aspects related to different branches from the Humanities such as Art History, Philosophy or Linguistics. The series welcomes manuscripts written in French and/or in English as well as translations of noteworthy texts from other foreign languages. La collection « Repenser le cinéma » privilégie les approches novatrices, les analyses de concepts, de genres, de courants, d’auteurs et de films rarement étudiés, qu’il s’agisse d’actes de colloque, d’essais, de versions remaniées de thèses de doctorat ou encore de monographies. Elle se propose d’offrir aux chercheurs, aux enseignants de l’audiovisuel ainsi qu’aux professionnels du cinéma des pistes de réflexion inédites sur la théorie, l’histoire et l’esthétique d’un art qui recèle de multiples chantiers peu balisés au cours du siècle qui l’a vu naître. La démarche méthodologique adoptée au sein des travaux publiés doit faire preuve d’originalité, d’audace et de rigueur scientifique, tout en visant les corrélations transdisciplinaires et transculturelles avec d’autres domaines des sciences humaines (histoire de l’art, philosophie, linguistique, etc.). New Disciplinary Perspectives on Education

Educational theory has always been framed within a wider context including philosophy, psychology, sociology and history. In the last ten years, educational discourse has been characterized by the emergence of a more managerialist paradigm and increased emphasis on the delivery of particular educational ‘outcomes’. This has taken place in the context of the huge expansion of tertiary education from the national level, a process in which education has come to be understood as a lucrative global commodity. But alongside these developments, there has also been a resurgence of interest in the educational insights provided by the disciplines of education: for example, renewed emphasis on enquiry-based approaches to learning (Dewey), social constructivist pedagogy (Vygotsky), educational critique (Bourdieu, Freire), new inter-religious pedagogies (Grimmit, Jackson) and fresh perspectives on the ‘spiral’ curriculum (Bruner). Much of this work takes the form of a critique of the instrumentalism of outcome-driven approaches. As the debt-laden student emerges as a political subject, educational discourse has come to represent a particularly contested terrain. The book series New Disciplinary Perspectives on Education seeks to explore how these debates within the resurgence of the disciplines of education relate to wider political and economic conditions, creating new critical understandings and possibilities within educational theory and practice. It welcomes both theoretical and empirical studies, alongside mixed-methods approaches, and publishes disciplinary studies within philosophy, psychology, sociology and history as well as encouraging cross-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary work.

La collection « Pensée et perspectives africaines » a pour but de révéler, de manière critique, les différents aspects de la pensée africaine. Elle s’efforce, d’une part, de mieux faire comprendre celle-ci et, d’autre part, de dégager les voies à travers lesquelles l’Afrique peut se construire et contribuer à la construction du monde. La collection se préoccupe de stimuler et de faire connaître l’expérience noétique africaine dans ce qu’elle a de spécifique et d’universel. Elle promeut la recherche et la réflexion au sens le plus large. En créant les conditions d’une connaissance à la fois intime et critique des langues, cultures et arts d’Afrique, elle favorise la production d'oeuvres nouvelles. Elle accueille donc toute étude de littérature, anthropologie, histoire, philosophie, art, linguistique, etc., quelle que soit sa provenance, qui contribue à faire connaître la pensée africaine ou d’inspiration africaine. The series «African Thought and Perspectives» aims at a critical analysis of the various aspects of African thought. On the one hand, it focuses on a better understanding of African thought and, on the other, it endeavours to find out ways through which Africa can develop itself while contributing to the development of the world as a whole. The series presents the African intellectual experience in its specificity as well as in its universality. It will also promote research and reflection on African matters in the widest sense. By creating the conditions in which African languages, cultures and arts can be intimately and critically examined, it encourages the production of new works. It, therefore, particularly welcomes studies on literature, anthropology, history, philosophy, art or linguistics that contribute to a better knowledge of African – or African-inspired –thought.
