  • Literary and Cultural Studies, Theory and the (New) Media

    ISSN: 0935-4093

    Literary and Cultural Studies, Theory and the (New) Media provides a forum for discussions on a variety of topics in literary, cultural, and media studies. Open to comparatist approaches, the series main venue is in anglophone literature and media, with a special emphasis on narratological, postcolonial, film and media studies. Dedicated to promoting innovative and theoretically informed analyses, the series publishes monographs as well as edited volumes versed in media and literary theory. It also encourages explorations within, as well as dialogues between, narratological, postcolonial, feminist and queer approaches. Other theoretical approaches (stylistics, New Historicism, ecocriticism, etc.) are welcome as are works on literary and cultural theory. All volumes in the series are peer-reviewed. Monographs: Only complete manuscripts are accepted for review. Edited volumes: A proposal with two essays is solicited; a final decision will be taken after all the essays have been submitted in their final form.     At a time when German Studies faces a serious challenge to its identity and position in the European and international context, this new series aims to reflect the increasing importance of both culture (in the widest sense) and linguistics to the study of German in Britain and Ireland. GLCS will publish monographs and collections of essays of a high scholarly standard which deal with German in its socio-cultural context, in multilingual and multicultural settings, in its European and international context and with its use in the media. The series will also explore the impact on German society of particular ideas, movements and economic trends and will discuss curriculum provision and development in universities in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. Contributions in English or German will be welcome. Cette collection vise à approfondir la réflexion sur les rencontres, les conflits et les transformations qui ont eu lieu au Moyen-Orient à partir du XVème siècle jusqu’au présent et même au-delà. Elle souhaite recevoir des propositions venant des sciences sociales et humaines prenant en consideration l’adoption, le développement ou la réélaboration de phénomènes sociaux et culturels fondamentaux dans l’aire du Moyen-Orient, conçu dans son acception la plus large, à n’importe quel moment de l’histoire entre le XVème siècle et l’âge contemporain avec une attention particulière à leurs futures implications.

The publications deal with the investigation and intercultural representation of contemporary culture and intellectual history by taking Iberian Studies, European Studies, Transatlantic and Global Studies into consideration. The major points of interest are the cultures of the Iberian Peninsula, their relation to each other, to Europe, to Latin America, and to cultural processes in a global context.     The Scottish Studies International (SSI) series produced by the Faculty of Translation Studies, Linguistics and Cultural Studies of the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz in Germersheim, Germany, publishes high-quality research work from across the broad and varied spectrum of Scottish Studies. Founded in 1982 by the late Professor Horst W. Drescher, the series originally focused on literature and translation studies. Current editor, Professor Klaus Peter Müller, has since extended its scope into the fields of cultural and media studies, a widening of range and perspective that is also reflected in the faculty's bi-annual Scottish Studies Newsletter. The series aims to explore both Scotland's turbulent past and its intriguing present flux in its culture, society, politics, economy, media, art, and literature. In order to evaluate their suitability for publication, all texts submitted will be peer-reviewed by the general editor as well as by members of the editorial board. Die Reihe kombiniert traditionelle Stärken mit innovativer Öffnung: Sie bietet Monographien und Sammelbände, die thematisch von historischer Linguistik bis zur Literatur der frühen Neuzeit und darüberhinaus reichen, aber auch Editionen englischer mediävistischer oder einschlägiger lateinischer Texte.   • Deutsch-ostasiatische Studien zur interkulturellen Literaturwissenschaft

    Germanistik als eine der Nationalphilologien wird in Europa zumeist auf sprach- und/oder literaturwissenschaftlicher Grundlage betrieben. In Ostasien dagegen beschäftigt man sich nicht nur mit der deutschen Sprache und Literatur, sondern auch mit vielen anderen Bereichen der deutschsprachigen Kultur. Deshalb ist die sogenannte Auslandsgermanistik zumindest in Ostasien nicht so sehr als Philologie, sondern eher als Kulturwissenschaft im Sinne von "cultural studies" zu begreifen. Ihre fachwissenschaftliche Arbeit beginnt üblicherweise mit der Übersetzung, die schon eine Menge geschichtlicher, landeskundlicher und soziologisch-mentalitätshistorischer Kenntnisse voraussetzt. Sie findet ihren interkulturellen Status zunehmend dadurch, daß vermehrt interdisziplinäre, vor allem kulturwissenschaftliche Aspekte einbezogen werden. Wissenschaftsgeschichtlich spielten die japanischen Germanisten eine vermittelnde Zubringerrolle für den internen germanistischen und ästhetischen Kulturaustausch in Ostasien.

Besides offering fresh analyses of major novels such as Jud Süß, Erfolg, and Goya and the often controversial films which some of them inspired, the series presents Feuchtwanger in the context of his times, paying special attention to his years in Southern California and his relationships with other leading cultural figures of the era such as Bertolt Brecht, Charles Chaplin, Thomas Mann, and Arnold Zweig. Besides offering fresh analyses of major novels such as Jud Süß, Erfolg, and Goya and the often controversial films which some of them inspired, the series presents Feuchtwanger in the context of his times, paying special attention to his years in Southern California and his relationships with other leading cultural figures of the era such as Bertolt Brecht, Charles Chaplin, Thomas Mann, and Arnold Zweig. Volumes in the series include selections of refereed papers from the biennial conferences of the International Feuchtwanger Society as well as specially commissioned monographs.
