Summary

A long introduction opens with the juxtaposition of some sixty-two varied exemplifications of the medieval imagination/fantasy/otherness/monstrosity. The variety hints at the intent of the volume: to formulate a “foundation for theoretical reflection,” i.e., theoretical relationships between medieval imaginations and fantasies and modern images and fantasies. That foundation, in turn, opens the final part of the introduction, “Summaries of the Contributions with Further Reflections” (196). The twenty-one contributions following (232‒788) firm up the foundation for theoretical reflection.
