Summary

Translation Studies now mostly focuses on an enlarged understanding of translation. In line with this growth, this collection aims at providing new perspectives to the field by focusing on the various dimensions of translational acts in the 21st century with special emphasis on multiple identities. In this respect, the book offers wide-ranging topics focusing on sign language interpreting, translator training, gender and translation, hyperobjects in translation, translation technologies, and multimodality in translation. By presenting all these current subjects influencing the translation process in our century, we underline the changing trends in translation and interpreting practices within the framework of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches.

Notes on Contributors

A. Şirin Okyayuz – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Şirin Okyayuz, is a trainer and researcher at the Hacettepe University Department of Translation and Interpreting in Ankara – Türkiye. She has published articles on audiovisual and literary translation and AVT training in national and international journals and contributed to international book chapters on the same subjects. She is the author (co-author) of several books on subtitling practices, AVT training, media accessibility and SDH, AVT history practice and training in Türkiye, the study of remakes, an overview of AVT trends in Türkiye and similar subjects. In addition to her work as an audiovisual translator, she has translated numerous children’s books, novels, short stories, drama for the stage, and books on politics and philosophy. She served as an advisory member of the Radio and Television Supreme Council negotiation meetings for the implementation of media accessibility practices in Türkiye; she is a member of the Coordination Group which drafted the Turkish Translator and Interpreter National Proficiencies and Standard and continues to work for the drafting of proficiencies for audiovisual translators.

Hilal Erkazancı Durmuş – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hilal Erkazancı Durmuş, is a trainer and researcher at the Hacettepe University Department of Translation and Interpreting in Ankara – Turkey. In her current works, she deals with translation sociology and critical discourse analysis.

Gökçen Hastürkoğlu – Gökçen Hastürkoğlu is Associate Professor of Translation Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of English Translation and Interpretation, Atılım University, Ankara, Turkey. After completing her undergraduate degree at Hacettepe University, Translation and Interpretation Department, she has earned her MA in the field of English Language and Literature. She has completed her PhD in the field of English Linguistics at Hacettepe University. Her research interests are translation pedagogy, cognitive linguistics, medical translation, translation of children’s literature, cultural studies, and translation criticism. She has published in internationally-indexed publications such as Australian Journal of Linguistics, Annals of the Ovidius University, Research in Language, Studies in Linguistics, Culture, and FLT, Journal of Language and Linguistic Studies, International Journal of Languages Education and Teaching, and as well as many national refereed journals.

←11 | 12→Göksel Öztürk – Göksel Öztürk is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Bursa Technical University. He completed his BA in English Language and Literature at Selçuk University. He completed his MA in English Language and Literature at Namık Kemal University. He completed his Ph.D. in Translation and Cultural Studies at Gazi University in 2020. His main interests are translation of comics and children’s periodicals, manipulation in translation, and multimodal translation. He is also interested in distance education and he is the director of the Distance Education Research Center at Bursa Technical University.

Mehmet Erguvan – Mehmet Erguvan is Assistant Professor of Translation Studies at Beykent University. He received his BA degree in English Translation and Interpreting at Hacettepe University and MA degree in the same department. He completed his PhD in Translation Studies in 2020 at Dokuz Eylül University with his dissertation “Intra-medial Transcultural Television Remakes in Turkey: An Interpretant-based Comparative Analysis of the American TV Series Desperate Housewives and its Turkish Remake Umutsuz Ev Kadınları”. His main research interests include audiovisual translation, media and translation, translation criticism, translation sociology and reception studies. He is also an active translator of social science books from English into Turkish.

Selen Tekalp – Selen Tekalp is currently working at the Department of English Language and Literature at Dicle University, Turkey. She received her B.A. from Dicle University, Department of English Language Teaching in 2008. She completed a master’s degree in English Literature at the University of Essex with a full scholarship. She has a PhD from Gazi University in translation and cultural studies. Her research focuses on a range of topics such as literary translation, self-translation, translation of popular fiction, ecocriticism, intertextuality, stylistics and postcolonialism.

Sema Üstün Külünk – Sema Üstün Külünk received her BA and MA degrees in translation at Boğaziçi University. She completed her Ph.D. in Translation and Interpreting Studies in 2019 at Boğaziçi University with her dissertation “Recontextualizing Turkish Islamist Discourse: Hilal (1958–1980) as a Site of Translational Repertoire Construction”. She worked as a research assistant at Boğaziçi University and Hacettepe University. She is currently working as an assistant professor at the Department of Translation and Interpreting - Doğuş University. Her research interests are translation history, religious text translations, Islamist translations, translator’s profile, and periodical studies.

Yeşim Dinçkan – Assistant Prof. Dr. Yeşim Dinçkan is a trainer and researcher at the Department of Translation and Interpreting at Hacettepe University. A translator of popular literature, Dr Dinçkan, mainly concentrates on studying ←12 | 13→contemporary literature, children’s literature from multiple translation studies perspective. Her research focuses on studying translated texts and translation processes with an aim to contribute to the field.

Büşra Özer Erdoğan – She received her bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature from Hacettepe University in 2010. Subsequently, she was accepted to serve as a legal translator to Human Rights Department under the Ministry of Justice. Meanwhile, she completed her master’s degree in the department of European Studies at Middle East Technical University in 2014. Due to her love for translation, she wished to further her education in the department of Translation and Cultural Studies at Gazi University where she obtained her Ph.D. degree in 2018. Her studies mostly focus on legal translation, literary translation and translation of children’s literature. She is currently working as an instructor of English at Hacı Bayram Veli University.

Kadir Sarıaslan – He has been working as a lecturer at School of Foreign Languages at Yalova University since 2009. He graduated from English Language and Literature Department, Ataturk University in 2008. Then he completed his master’s degree from English Language and Literature Department at Çanakkale 18 Mart University in 2015. Finally, he got his PhD from Translation and Interpreting Department, Translation and Cultural Studies at Gazi University in 2021. His main research areas are poetry translation, translation of enjambment technique in poetry, machine translation, automated quality assessment of translation, politeness theory and its implications at translation, speech acts, cooperative principle and all linguistics.

Müge Kalıpcı – Having graduated from the Department of English Language and Literature at Erciyes University, Müge Kalıpcı received her MA degree in the same department by specializing at using drama in teaching English as a foreign language. As an exchange student, she received education at Jagellonian University in Krakow. She was awarded Fulbright Scholarship for MA Studies and did her internship at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki during MA thesis period. After receiving her PhD degree from Gazi University on Translation and Cultural Studies, she worked part-time as a translator and training coordinator in Spain. She is currently affiliated with Erciyes University, where she works as a lecturer. She carries out her academic studies in the fields of literary translation, cultural studies and intertextuality.

Siray Lengerli Aydemir – Siray Lengerli Aydemir received her BA degree in English Linguistics from Hacettepe University, Ankara, in 2002. She completed her Master’s degree at Atılım University, Ankara, in the Department of International Relations. She completed her PhD studies in English Culture and Literature at Atılım University. She worked as an instructor of English in the ←13 | 14→School of Foreign Languages at Atılım University for 18 years. She is currently working as a lecturer in the department of English Translation and Interpretation at Atılım University. Her research interests include colonial discourse and post-colonial theory, resistance, power and linguistic imperialism.

Ahsen Ay - Ahsen Ay is a graduate of Translation and Interpreting Studies BA / Boğaziçi University, and Translation and Interpreting Studies MA / Hacettepe University; she is currently a PhD candidate in Translation and Interpreting Programme / Hacettepe University. She works as a research assistant in the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies at Hacettepe University. Her academic research interests include translation sociology, retranslations, fictional translators, and critical discourse analysis.

Elif Ceylan Yağız – Elif Ceylan Yagiz is a PhD candidate in the Department of Translation and Interpreting (English programme) at Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey. She works as a freelance, consecutive translator on social sciences and business sector. She also teaches Academic English in preparatory and vocational schools. She is specifically eager to conduct research in the field of African culture, black feminism, migrants, and queer identities. Her main research interests are post-colonial translation studies, gender studies, queer translation, intermediality, multimodal translation, literary translation, and intersemiotic translation.

Introduction

Identity is one of the most important political and cultural concepts today. Identities are being formed, deconstructed and reconstructed in our contemporary world as a result of globalization, the spread of mass media, technological developments and such. The role of translation within the context of power relations, representation and identity has always been important, both in the past and present. The processes of deconstruction and reconstruction of identities can be discussed from different perspectives within the context of Translation Studies: For example, the processes of identification of individuals can be considered as a kind of translation and the in-betweenness experienced in these processes and “the Third Spaces” created cannot be considered independently of translation.

These perspectives are mostly part of the enlarged understanding of translation in our contemporary world. Within this context, in addition to the proliferation of meanings attributed to translation, a less Eurocentric perspective is also welcome in Translation Studies.

Keeping this in mind, this collection includes studies focusing on many different corpus such as children’s books, court judgments and decisions, comic strips, audiovisual texts, autobiographies, novels and mangas and reveals the importance of translation in the formation of cultural identities.

In this sense, the collection covers various contemporary subjects in Translation Studies including translation technologies, transfiction with special emphasis on the identity of the fictional translators, translator and interpreter training and accessibility, the reflection of postcolonialism through translation in the 21st century, the identities reflected through translation from the perspective of gender and translation, the multimodal role of translators in children’s literature, manga translation, and magazine translation. Each topic covered in the book has revealed innovative approaches in the context of translation and identity. Moreover, case studies selected within the Turkish context contribute the expansion of the field outside a Eurocentric/American vision.

Sinem Sancaktaroğlu-Bozkurt (Volume editor) Tuğçe Elif Elif Taşdan-Doğan (Volume editor)

Sinem Sancaktaroğlu-Bozkurt holds a PhD in cultural studies from Hacettepe University, Ankara. She is Associate Professor of Translation Studies at the same university, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on gender and translation, popular culture, translation of popular literature, translation of children’s literature, contemporary translation studies and translation criticism. She has mostly published in gender and translation, postcolonial translation, literary translation and media accessibility for children. She is also a professional literary translator. Her recent translations include works by Jodi Picoult, Edward St. Aubyn, Kiley Reid and Shubhangi Swarup. Tuğçe Elif Taşdan-Doğan has received her Ph.D. Degree from Gazi University, Ankara. She works as Assistant Professor at the University of Samsun, and she was the Founding Head of the Department of Translation and Interpreting at the University of Samsun. She carries out her academic studies in the fields of sociology of translation, sociological intertextuality in translation studies, medical translation, literary translation, and translation technologies. She knows English and French at advanced level, Chinese at intermediate level.
