Summary

The World Economic Forum prepared a manifesto-like statement and opened the issue of the great reset to the discussion. The great reset lays out the main idea of rebuilding the world economy and redesigning capitalism in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The idea is emerging that the biggest crisis after the great depression in 1929 is currently being experienced due to Covid-19 and that Covid-19 will have very serious and long-term effects on economic growth, public debt, employment and human welfare. According to the fathers of the great reset, for the world to recover after Covid-19, radical changes should be made in many areas from education to social contracts and working conditions, countries should act together, and all industries should be transformed per new conditions and ways of working.

The World Economic Forum prepared a manifesto-like statement and opened the issue of the great reset to discussion. The Great Reset lays out the main idea of rebuilding the world economy and redesigning capitalism in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The idea is emerging that the biggest crisis after the Great Depression in 1929 is currently being experienced due to Covid-19 and that Covid-19 will have very serious and long-term effects on economic growth, public debt, employment, and human welfare. The idea of the Great Reset is explained under seven main headings: capitalizing on the fourth industrial revolution, strengthening regional development, stimulating global cooperation, developing sustainable business models, improving the health of the environment, redesigning social contracts, skills, and jobs, and shaping economic recovery.

According to the fathers of the Great Reset, for the world to recover after Covid-19, radical changes should be made in many areas from education to social contracts and working conditions, countries should act together, and all industries should be transformed in accordance with new conditions and ways of working. Because the Covid-19 pandemic will have serious and long-term consequences on economic growth, public debt, employment and human welfare, and these results will increase social tension, combined with the already worsening global warming and environmental problems, the tangle of problems will grow. When increasing income inequality is added to all these, a very fragile economic structure will be encountered and policies to save the day will be insufficient. Therefore, economic, and social systems need to be built from scratch on new foundations.

The digital transformation, which started with the fourth industrial revolution and accelerated during the Covid-19 process, will cause the growth of technology companies the most. The rapid digital transformation seen in education, health, sports, banking, and e-commerce will increase the importance of the cyber security sector. The companies that grew very fast during the epidemic have been the companies that have adapted to the new trends and provided the best customer service in both in-store and online sales. In this regard, the main idea in micro reset is there is a future after Covid-19 for companies that can adapt to new trends and make the necessary transformation, but those who cannot adapt will not survive in the post-covid world.

←9 | 10→Discussions on the production and consumption of information in the world are increasingly moving forward. Information technologies used in the production of knowledge are also developing and diversifying day by day. Information technologies have an important role in the formation of today’s living conditions. The increasing prevalence of these technologies helps to improve many jobs and life processes. The Covid-19 pandemic process, which appears as a period when habits must change, forces individuals to be more careful in all areas. In this process, where we must realize old habits in different ways, the new possibilities offered by information technologies allow us to digitize all processes faster than ever before. By using mobile phones, computers, and tablets without being in physical contact, all information processes can continue without slowing down. According to some opinions, it is thought that the digitalization process has accelerated with the pandemic. When information technologies are mentioned, technologies consisting of hardware, software and networks come to mind. These technologies can be physical as well as non-physical possibilities.

Preface Great Reset and the New Era with Different Perspectives

Covid 19 – The pandemic period has caused a new transformation in every field. Starting from people’s consumer habits, with the change to human resources, working behaviors and durations in workplaces have been affected and digitalization has created a new space. A more unified and digital world has also had an impact on the governments of states. The fact that everyone can easily access every information and product they want over the internet has affected the interaction between countries due to trade. In this process, countries had to go through changes to keep up with the world. However, the biggest impact of the pandemic has been in the education system. The closure of schools and the online education process continued from home has changed the way of education all over the world. The area where digital transformation was felt the most was the finance and banking sector. Digitization, which is the result of working from home, has now enabled people to perform transactions without the need to physically go to the bank. All the areas mentioned here constitute the main chapters of the book and are explained in detail below.

Covid 19 and Consumption Expenditures: The Covid-19 pandemic process, which has caused changes in many areas in a short time around the world, has also affected consumption practices and consumer behaviors. Many factors such as curfews applied to reduce the effects of the epidemic, mandatory quarantine periods, stopping of entry and exit between countries, intercity travel restrictions, and the uneasiness of virus contamination due to the inability to maintain social distance in crowded environments have brought about significant changes in consumer behavior. Numerous new researches on changing consumer behavior have been made and published (Erkan, 2020:). With the increasing effect of the pandemic, the shopping activities of consumers have started to change (Güven, 2020).

Changing consumer behavior related to the process has brought along many new and special research. DORinsight, a market research company with the largest authorized database in Turkey with over 1 million registered members, conducted a study on “Changing consumer behavior after the epidemic” with the participation of 5,007 people over the age of 18 between 15 and 20 April 2020. Results on how purchasing behaviors are affected have been obtained.

←11 | 12→According to the results of the research, 92 % of the female participants and 84 % of the male participants stated that their purchasing behavior has changed, and 60 % of them stated that their monthly expenditures have increased in this process. According to purchasing preferences, the food sector ranked first with 69 %, while hygiene products ranked second with 60 %. In meeting the needs, 60 % of the participants gave importance to hygiene, 15 % to price, 12 % to accessibility, 92 % to quality, and 4 % to speed. According to the results of the research, 86 % of the participants stated that the use of social media increased during the Covid-19 pandemic (DORinsight, 2020).

Even though consumer behavior has shown some differences according to regions or cultures, it can be said that it basically changes in the same direction with different accelerations. According to the research results of the Nielsen Research company, two weeks after the first officially determined case statement of the USA on January 30, 2020, the sales of medical products such as disinfectants and masks, respectively, compared to the previous week; An increase of 4 %, 47 % and 53 % was observed. In Turkey, on the night of March 10, 2020, when the first case was announced, and on the following day, there was a simultaneous increase in demand for proactive and reactive health products and kitchen products related to “pantry preparation”. This shows that in the global world, the processes of crises differ according to countries (NielsenIQ, 2020).

With the widespread use of the internet, which is used in all parts of society today, people’s behaviors, habits and shopping styles have changed significantly as well as their lives. (Turan, 2008). Rapid changes in the information age have brought about rapid developments in the use of technology. This development, which affects all areas of life, has also affected the way and understanding of trade of consumers (Akçi & Annaç Göv, 2015). As a result of the increase in e-commerce volumes, the development of mobile applications for online shopping, and the increase in payment and delivery options, there is a serious growth in e-commerce all over the world day by day.

Although the retail sector has weakened due to reasons such as people staying at home because of the Covid-19 pandemic and curfews around the world and the anxiety of disease transmission, electronic commerce has begun to experience its golden age (Güven, 2020). The changing consumer behaviors and lifestyles with the epidemic have radically affected the digital transformation process and brought it to a completely different point.

The use of television and the internet has increased, and visitor traffic has increased significantly in e-commerce (Yıldız, 2020). In this period, e-commerce sites selling on the internet also turned the process into an advantage. As the market share of e-commerce companies has increased, many of them have ←12 | 13→either revised their existing e-commerce platform or started to establish a new e-commerce platform.

Human Resources and Digital Transformation: The globalization and industrialization process experienced throughout the world has changed the way businesses operate, business relations, long-term returns of the business, professions, and the perspective of manpower (Türkel & Yeşilkuş, 2020). Due to the intense competitive environment, almost all organizations are now focusing on providing access to Human Resources services through technology and web-based applications.
