A note on bibliographical references
Dates given for plays are those of première, followed by publication (e.g. 1678; 1679). By default, quotations from plays are followed by act, scene, and line number (e.g. 1.1.136–37). When the editions we are using do not number lines, page number is given instead (5.2, p. 63).
Citations from critical texts are followed by page number only, or by year of publication and page number when more than one work by the same author(s) has been cited (e.g. Milhous and Hume 1987: 103). When the text cited appears in a multivolume work, volume number precedes and is separated from page number by colon (e.g. Baker et al. 1: 212). Full details for all the works cited appear in the list of References.
