Pandemic and Migration in the Context of Covid-19
1 Introduction
Although there are many reasons for people’s migration within or between countries, economic reasons are dominant. However, migrations also cause epidemics to spread to other geographies. With the emergence and spread of the COVID-19 outbreak in March 2020, the epidemic went far beyond a global health crisis, affecting all aspects of life economically, socially, and psychologically. It has been impossible to measure both the epidemic’s full effects and the continuation of secondary effects caused by the epidemic’s consequences over the long term. The financial and health-related results of the COVID-19 outbreak further affected vulnerable and fragile groups such as migrants, principally forcibly displaced populations, and posed a significant threat. With the pandemic, global lockdowns and the economic slowdown have harmed immigrants’ physical and mental health, damaged their financial position and subjected them to violence and abuse and a lack of protection. In this study, the dimensions of the migration phenomenon during pandemic periods and the pandemic’s effects on migration in the context of COVID-19 are discussed in different aspects.
2 Migration Phenomenon and Causes
Throughout history, nomadic tribes wandered for new pastures for their livestock, and other places for hunting and fishing. After people started migrating, they searched for more fertile land and created new settlements. Today, migration still occurs all over the world. Migration is the movement of an individual or group who intend to leave one country and settle in another country permanently. Migration is also a phenomenon that can occur domestically. People depart from rural areas and move to big cities to seek better opportunities (Montiglio, 2020). In the post-Second World War era, migration was chiefly the result of the refugee movement following the war and from former colonies in Asia and Africa in the 1950s and 60s. Migration from these regions to former empire centres such as the United Kingdom and France thus increased. There were two factors that accelerated migration in the post-World War II period. The first is the beginning ←19 | 20→of refugee movements in the post-war period, and the second is the end of colonialism in Asia and Africa in the 1950s and 60s (Parry, 2007).
The definition of migration can differ depending on the different perspectives on migration. According to worldwide organizations, migration is an international movement of people to a destination country where the people are not native or citizens, and who wish to settle as permanent residents or naturalized citizens (Refugee Council, 2021). In another description, migration is expressed as the abandonment of a country or region individually or collectively, depending on any social order such as economic, political, military, or illness (Immigration Bureau, 2020). These definitions divide migration into two as domestic and foreign. Therefore, while discussing the reasons for migration, it is necessary to consider the reasons for internal migration and external migration (intercountry) separately. Often in the context of immigration, there are both push and pull factors. The push and pull factors of migration are shown in Table 1.
